TWENTY-SIX

THINGS HE DOES.

I don't know what I was thinking when I thought Kane could change for me or at least what he feels for me. This do-it-yourself seemed like a good idea back then but now I feel like I am fighting an endless battlefield with him. Maybe it's time I accept that he doesn't date and will never change for anyone. I switch the TV off as my phone rings and I grab it from the coffee table.

It's Logan.

"Hello,"

"Thank God you answered. Kane is injured and he doesn't want to go to the hospital. We don't know what to do anymore, he is losing a lot of blood. Please come over to his house maybe you can talk some sense into him,"

"I'm coming," I hang and slip into my slippers. Dad shifts on the couch but doesn't wake up. I tiptoe to the front door and rush to my car. My heart is pounding like never before on what might have happened. He doesn't lose in a fight, so the only thing I can think of is that someone was a sore loser. I speed to his house and practically run to the front door.

"Thank you for coming!" Brian says when he sees me.

"Where is he?" I ask pulling my hair into a bun.

"Living room," I follow Brian and find him barely conscious on the couch and rush to him.

"Oh my God," I kneel next to Logan who has a bowl of water and a cloth trying to clean him up.

"What the hell happened to him?" I ask, shocked.

His face is beaten up and he has a stab wound on his stomach.

"That is what we would love to know also. It's like he wanted to be beaten up." Brian says from behind and I turn to look at him.

"What do you mean?" I ask as I place the wet cloth on his forehead, and he groans.

"It's like he was punishing himself but for what I don't know and since there are no rules at Insurgent, so anything is legal," Brian informs

"Why did you allow him to even continue fighting?" I furiously ask.

"Stopping Kane is like asking for a death wish. There was nothing we could do. He does what he wants when he wants and whenever he wants. You should know this by now," Brian says and I sigh pushing some of the hair that has covered his face.

"He needs to go to the hospital," I state the obvious.

"Tell that to him," Logan stands up.

"No— n....no hospital," Kane says with a crack in his voice.

"Can you guys give us a moment?" I ask the guys; they nod and walk out.

"Why did you let that guy stab you?" I ask and he attempts to sit straight.

"Fuck!" He curses.

"You are just making yourself feel worse," I say but he doesn't listen, and I end up helping him.

"I needed to feel some pain for leading you on, breaking your heart, and for being rude to you." He says and my eyes widen when I finally realize that he was punishing himself.
